A recent article from FiveThirtyEight highlights new Pew Center research that shows that for the first time in more than 130 years, living with parents is the most common living arrangement (32.1%) for those age 18 to 34. Measurements regarding living in parents� home do not discern between whether the individual is in a romantic relationship or not. Though high, current trends do not surpass those of 1940 when 35% of young adults lived with their parents.
Pew Research also looked at gender differences and found that, among young men, 35% live with their parents and 28% are married or cohabitating with a partner. Among young women, the inverse is true and 35% of women aged 18-34 live with spouses or partners while 29% live with their parents. FiveThirtyEight highlights the long standing demographic trends away from marriage at a younger age as a reason why more millennials are moving in with their parents. Another contributing factor may be the rising diversity of the younger United States population, and historic trends of blacks and Hispanics living with parents for longer than their white peers. Other reasons may be economic, including the nascent restabilization of the job market, Millennials having to settle for lower paying, part time work early in their careers, higher rents, and rising student debts.
