According to a recent report from Pew Research Social and Demographic Trends, the "most meaningful" work that American adult report doing is caring for their children while it is also the "most tiring." A solid majority of Americans, 62%, said that they find child care to be the most meaningful work that they do compared to those who said that paid work was most meaningful, 36%. The meaningfulness of paid work was surpassed by those who said that housework was most meaningful, 36% to 43% respectively. Conversely, respondents reported that child care is very tiring, 12%, while paid work and leisure were each deemed very tiring by only 5% of respondent.
The findings are based on data taken from Well-being Module from the 2010 American Time Use Survey (ATUS) by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The data gathering method was a "time diary" that asks the respondent to record sequentially each activity accomplished during one 24-hour period and respond to questions about their feeling before, during, and after three randomly selected tasks.
